Ubuntu & Mac OS X on VMware Workstation 6 beta
Yesterday VMware released the public beta of VMware Workstation 6, and like any good fan who doesn’t want to afford the commercial release (yet), grabbed it off the net and started mucking around with it.
Today, I’m happy to announce the successful installation of Ubuntu 6.10 and Mac OS X (Tiger) happily, though not perfectly, running on Windows XP.
The Ubuntu VM runs surprisingly well, and I was glad to find that VW6 detects my dual-core laptop as 2 processors which I can freely allocate. I tried VMware Server on the same machine before and it only showed 1 processor.

Although I get a lot of praise for accomplishing this, the Mac OS X installation doesn’t run as fast and nicely as the Linux one. It is after all a patched version of OS X Tiger Intel dev kit. In fact, this VM was running a little faster on VMware Server I had installed last week.

I’ve allocated both VMs 1GB of RAM each, somehow OS X doesn’t like the 2 processors, so I had to step down to 1 processor on that one. Both VMs have also been allocated 6GB of disk space.
The machine I’m using is a HP Compaq 8430, 2.0Ghz dual-core, 2GB RAM.
And just one last point on being completely transparent, VMware is my client at Hill & Knowlton, but they don’t have a clue I’m mucking around like this. I’d be doing this either way.
