50 million tweets per day

That's quite a whole lot of tweets. 600 tweets per second. Who would have thought sharing short messages with the public mattered? =)

What is Google Buzz?

Google Buzz is really Twitter with a Facebook philosophy. Buzz doesn't really replace Twitter because Twitter is designed to be totally public where someone you have never met and will never meet could read your posts and even subscribe to your stream. Buzz is only to be delivered to people you know. There's no public stream although someone could still read your posts via your profile.

But still, it's hard to discover new people on Buzz. Discovery on Google Buzz is much like Facebook where the system recommends you people they think you should or do know. But unlike Facebook, Buzz is too simple. Twitter simple, where all you get is a stream of consciousness. Facebook does a great job with sections: Photos go here, Videos there, Inbox on the top, etc. Then again like Facebook, comments are threaded and easy to follow unlike Twitter's open RT and @ the world way of dialog.

I'm not sold on Buzz yet, but it may end up being like Google Talk's chat bar in Gmail. I use it simply because it's there in Gmail which is my browser's startpage btw. But with all social networks IMs, it's about where the crowd is at.

Aside: Social Networks/IMs that I've tried and died include:

  • Friendster (Friends moved to Facebook)
  • Plurk (Twitter was where everyone was)
  • Jaiku (Same as above)
  • ICQ (Everyone moved to MSN)
  • Yahoo Messenger (Same as above)

Wrangler Jeans lets you push their model around

Too often jeans companies only let you look at the models wearing the goods, Wrangler lets you "play" with theirs. Fantastic frame-by-frame interactive play Wrangler has done on their site. Push the guy around, strip the shirt off his back. Nothing lets you appreciate jeans more than seeing them in action.

Love this campaign and the music is super awesome too!

My interview with Buzzmedia - An introduction to social media monitoring

David Wang who runs Buzzmedia is a great guy. He's so involved with the social media scene in Malaysia and I'm glad to have him as a friend. We took this interview of my introducing JamiQ and social media monitoring at a Starbucks at The Curve in KL.

Speaking at Social Media Club KL

I was up in Kuala Lumpur for a fantastic time at Social Media Club KL. This is the 15 minutes of fame the afforded for me to talk about social media monitoring and my company JamiQ.

Malaysia goes viral on Twitter with #yorais!

Brilliant video put together from tweets in response to the Malaysian Information Communication and Culture minister, Dr Rais Yatim's comments on usage of social networks and internet culture.

Say the wrong thing and people come together online to voice their opposition. Don't you love the power of the social media?

Grandma Sends Tweets via Fax

This is so cool. Now even grandma can get on the social media with nothing more than a fax machine. Services such as Cellery actually do make good sense bridging the digital divide.

The impact of iPhone on StarHub

My local mobile carrier StarHub in Singapore got a huge boost in online conversations today simply by announcing the availability of the iPhone by year-end. StarHub is the third and last carrier to announce its carrying of the Apple mobile phone, but even so it didn't fail to get people talking.

Most conversations took place on Twitter with links to news articles and the StarHub media release.

What happened to Technorati?

Technorati used to be my favorite blog search engine. But all of a sudden, they decided to make "big changes" and go the way of the advertising network. Once upon a time they used to index some 100 million blogs, but now when you do a search on their site you get statements like:

Blogs relating to “iphone” (1610 blogs found out of 825402)

What happened? How did they go from 100 million in 2007 to 825,402 in 2009?

It also appears that they don't care much about blogs that are not in the top 800,000. My blog now has an Authority Score of: nil. Even prominent local blogs such as Mr Brown's has a score of 0 (at least his has a score).

I have no issues with them wanting to expand into the advertising business, but why purge the rest of the blogs from the search engine? I'm just glad there are alternatives like Google Blog Search and IceRocket around.

Update: To add to my this news on Technorati, Technorati Japan will be ceasing operation by the end of the month. (Hat tip to Walter)

SocialSeek takes social media searching local

SocialSeek is a really interesting free software that lets you search the social media not just for a topic/keyword of your choice, but also the city/country it comes from. In my example screenshot, I searched for F1 in Singapore since we just had the GP here last week. Pretty decent results, not sure what's missed out though. I reckon it's a useful tool for PR folk in the region where our smaller population's social media activities often get drowned out by the rest of the world. This way one can zoom right in to the local content.
